Maurice Jones-Drew Knows He Has to Earn His Job Back

Maurice Jones-Drew’s summer-long holdout not only resulted in him not receiving the lucrative contract extension he was seeking.  It also lead to him being demoted to second on the Jacksonville Jaguars’ running back depth chart.  Rashad Jennings will get the start for Week 1 as the Jaguars travel to Minnesota to take on the Vikings.  While MJD is supportive of his teammate as he gets acclimated to his new duties, he knows what he has to do in order to get his old job back. From The Times-Union:

Before practice Wednesday, Jones-Drew said: “I have to work to get my job back. That’s all it is. Nobody has ever given me anything so I’m used to it. I like it because the competition is going to be great.”

“Instead of working against each other, you work together to get to a goal,” Jones-Drew said. “Rashad has helped me out. We just want to be better to help the team win and at the same time, compete for the same job.”

Jennings has long been viewed as a more than capable back up if the Jags were suddenly confronted with life without MJD.  While he doesn’t possess Jones-Drew’s gamebreaking qualities, Rashad Jennings should be able to hold his own until MJD whips himself into football shape.
