A week ago, San Diego Chargers running back Ryan Mathews announced that he was “ahead of schedule” in his recovery from a broken clavicle and was on track to play next Monday night versus the Oakland Raiders. On Monday, Mathews returned to practice. Fantasy owners who view that as great news may want to pump their brakes a bit – Mathews has not been cleared for contact and it is highly unlikely that he’d be allowed to play without that clearance being issued. Playing next Monday would put Mathews right at the four week mark of recovery from an injury one prominent physician said it takes eight full weeks to recover from. I highly doubt Mathews plays next week. The Chargers would be smart to play it safe with his health.
