Larry Fitzgerald Wants a Super Bowl Ring Over Top 100 Status

Super Bowl XLIII – the Pittsburgh Steelers v. the Arizona Cardinals.  Probably my favorite Super Bowl of the last decade.  It produced some of the greatest highlights ever in the league’s biggest game.

Don’t remember?  Let me jog your memory …

There was James Harrison’s 100 yard interception return for a touchdown just before half time:

With less than three minutes left on the clock and the game on the line, Kurt Warner connected with Larry Fitzgerald on this beautiful touchdown pass:

The Cardinals took the lead on that play and appeared to be in the driver’s seat … until Big Ben marched his Steelers down the field on a 78 yard touchdown drive that culminated with what is the most memorable game winning touchdown catch in Super Bowl history:

Sadly for Larry Fitzgerald, that’s as close as he’d get to a Super Bowl ring.

That fact was not lost on him as he reflected on his ranking in the NFL’s Top 100 Players of 2012.

I’ve completed 8 NFL seasons, & while I am somewhatsatisfied with personal achievements, I have come close only once to achieving the ultimate team goal.

Being a productive WR is no longer enough. I’ve grown into a position of leadership as a Cardinals team captain and have tried to expand my role as a mentor and example for our core of young players.

My sincere hope is that we can get back to the playoffs on a regular basis and become Super Bowl Champions.

Our team was 2minutes away from that goal on February 4, 2009, and similarly, my 7th rank of NFL top players leaves room for improvement.

I will strive as always to expand my role and contributions to team success, be as productive as possible, and win a Championship…..

The biggest obstacle in the way of Fitzgerald reaching this goal?  The unbearable quarterback play he has been forced to endure since the retirement of Kurt Warner.  If he ever links up with a half-way competent quarterback before he skills diminish, a return to the Big Game should not be out of the question.
