In 1994, the San Diego Chargers surprised the football world and made a run to the Super Bowl. They wound up losing to a San Francisco 49ers team that had future Hall of Famers Jerry Rice and Steve Young in their primes. Their success that season was regarded by many as a Cinderella story. This week, Junior Seau was found dead in his home, the victim of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. Seau became the eighth member of that 1994 Chargers team to die before the age of 45.

  • David Griggs (February 5, 1967 – June 19, 1995) – Car Accident
  • Rodney Culver (December 23, 1969 – May 11, 1996) – Plane Crash
  • Doug Miller (October 29, 1969 – July 21, 1998) – Struck by lightning
  • Curtis Whitley (May 10, 1969 – May 11, 2008) – Drug Overdose
  • Chris Mims (September 29, 1970 – October 15, 2008) – Cardiac Arrest
  • Shawn Lee (October 24, 1966 – February 26, 2011) – Cardiac Arrest (brought on by double pneumonia)
  • Lewis Bush (December 2, 1969 – December 8, 2011) – Heart Attack
  • Junior Seau (January 19, 1969 – May 2, 2012) – Suicide

Stan Humphries, the starting quarterback of that San Diego Chargers Super Bowl team had this to say to Sports Illustrated:

“Each one that comes along, it’s kind of scary thinking about yourself. What’s in store for me?” … I sit around here every day and it’s amazing how many people have died off of that team.”
