Toby Gerhart Is The Man In Minnesota (For Now)

The Vikings will rely heavily on Toby Gerhart in the upcoming season

As Adrian Peterson Rehabs a Blown Out Knee, His Backup Steps Up In His Absence – With the uncertainty surrounding the health of their starting running back Adrian Peterson, the Minnesota Vikings have plowed ahead with a temporary alternative in place. The man currently at the top of the running back depth chart, Toby Gerhart, shared with views with the Star Tribune:

“I’m preparing to be the guy,” Gerhart said Wednesday, taking a short break from the team’s offseason conditioning work. “I try to do that every year. But this year it’s a little more prevalent. I’m doing everything I can to be here, work hard, work with the new guys we have coming in. I’m pushing everybody and getting pushed by other guys. Preparing to be the guy, depending on whether Adrian comes back.”

During the 2011 season, Gerhart ran for a 4.9 yard average per carry. He also filled in admirably on the day Peterson went down with his injury, going off for 109 yards on 11 carries in a Week 16 win versus the Washington Redskins. Peterson’s aim is to be on the field in Week 1 of the 2012 season. Toby Gerhart will provide a decent fall back option if Adrian isn’t available
